Single-Dose vs Hopper Grinding: What Actually Changes

By the dialed team · 6 min read · Updated 2026-07-13

Every new enthusiast grinder is a single doser now. The workflow (weigh one dose, grind it all, keep retention near zero) genuinely changed home espresso. But some of its reputation is marketing.

What single dosing actually buys you

Fresher coffee, because beans sit in the bag rather than oxidizing in a hopper on your counter. Effortless bean switching, with no purging half a hopper to change coffees. And honest dose accuracy, because near-zero retention means what you weigh in is what comes out.

Single dosers, cheapest first

What's overstated

Retention below about half a gram is a non-issue you clear with one puff of a bellows. Sub-0.1 g retention races are a spec-sheet sport, not a taste difference. And a hopper grinder that's dialed in and used daily loses very little to staleness.

If you brew the same coffee every day in volume, a good hopper grinder is not a mistake.
