PRO TIPS If your portafilter still locks in around 5 to 6 o'clock, this standard 8 mm thickness is correct, once it starts locking in noticeably past 6, size up to the 8.75 mm thick version instead of tolerating the drift. Use a food-safe silicone lubricant such as food-safe white grease, never petroleum-based grease. When installing, never push it in with a sharp screwdriver, it will tear; use the portafilter itself with the basket removed.
