Wall hooks that stick out permanently are a nuisance in a narrow hallway, because you catch your shoulder on them every time you pass an empty one. This Marlow Vane rack solves that with six pegs that fold flat against the board when they are not in use, so the whole thing sits almost flush and only takes up space when it is actually holding something.

The piano key layout is what makes it look designed rather than practical. Six pegs in a row, each folding independently, so a rack half in use reads as a pattern rather than a mess. Three wood finishes are offered, from a lighter natural tone through to deeper walnut, which lets the rack either disappear against a pale wall or sit against it as a dark line.

Buy it now if your hallway wall is currently a pile of coats on a chair. Fix it into a solid wall or into studs with fixings rated for the weight you intend to hang, and remember that coats and bags loaded with keys and books weigh more than they look. Fold the unused pegs away when the rack is not full, and wipe the timber down with a dry cloth only.

Format: wall mounted rack with six independently folding pegs

Design: piano key layout, pegs fold flat when not in use

Finishes: three wood tones from natural through to walnut

Suits: hallways, back doors, bedrooms, bathrooms and utility rooms

Fitting: fix into a solid wall or studs with fixings rated for the load

Care: do not overload, wipe the timber with a dry cloth only
