Pulling the lever moves this rod against the cam, which compresses a spring acting on a bushing; that bushing pushes a second rod that presses the valve's gasket holder and a second spring to open the valve. It's one of the more involved rebuild jobs on these machines because of the stacked spring-and-bushing chain. PRO TIPS Lay out the spring and bushing stack in the order you remove it before touching the rod, because two springs and a bushing sit between the cam and the valve gasket holder, it's easy to reassemble the stack out of sequence and end up with a valve that won't fully close or won't open smoothly.
